New debate on LGBT and feminism has started

How to participate and follow the debate?

A quick introduction to the structure of the debate started by Patricia Prendiville’s position paper and information on how to participate.

When will the debate start and what will it be about?

The debate will start on August 24th, 2007. The foundation for the debate is a position paper by Patricia Prendiville, Executive Director ILGA-Europe, in which she addresses what she believes to be the most important issues concerning LGBT communities in Europe. Although Patricia’s paper is comprehensive, there are many other issues relevant to LGBTQI people and viewpoints that need to be voiced.

How can I participate?

We invite you to share your reactions to Patricia Prendiville’s piece and your own thoughts on what is important to discuss for LGBTQI people and allies in Europe on our website. You can send us an article/video/image in response to Patricia’s piece, or on whatever LGBTQI issue you would like, to be posted on our website. To do this, please send your contribution to The European Feminist Forum Secretariat. You may also respond with a shorter message to our discussion list. You can also syndicate the LGBTI section by clicking the RSS button at the bottom of the page. Another way you can help is by forwarding this request within your networks to people who you think might be interested. We want to include as many voices and viewpoints as possible, so any contribution you make will be greatly appreciated.

How will the debate be structured?

The debate is an open space for everyone to participate. The debate will initially be focused around issues mentioned in Patricia’s paper, including marriage, parental rights and responsibilities, the role of care, transgender and gender identity issues, multiple identities, and sex work/prostitution. Each of these topics has a separate discussion thread within the LGBTQI debate. However, the debate is not limited to these topics and more will be added based on people’s participation. After the first week, each week the chair will identify two main topics that will be the focus of the debate that week.

How can I track the debate?

You will be able to follow the progress of the debate by visiting our website often. The chair of the debate will produce weekly summaries and updates about the content and progress of the debate that will be published in the LGBTI section, of our website, along with other articles that will be uploaded by people like you. You can also follow the debate within the discussion list. You can also subscribe to our newsletter to receive updated information about the debate and general activities of the European Feminist Forum.

What is the purpose of the debate?

This debate will set the foundation for the Poland 2008 discussions about LGBTQI issues as well as facilitate dialogue between different European feminists involved with LGBTQI issues. This debate will also be a test case for further debates to be held on the European Feminist Forum website.
